The National Conflict Resolution Center’s signature workshop, the Introductory Mediation Skills (IMS) training, gives participants a thorough understanding of conflict resolution, mediation theory, and interest based negotiation.  Much more than this theoretical framework, the NCRC IMS is known nationally and internationally for the practical, step-by-step process that helps people learn how to mediate in a very concrete way.  Learning the NCRC methodology empowers new mediators to navigate the unchartered territory of being a third party neutral.  Engaging discussion, participatory exercises, short demonstrations or lectures, and plenty of practice mediating makes this course a meaningful learning experience for all participants, no matter what their background or future plans for mediation. This course transforms the way in which one looks at conflict and conflict resolution.

Curriculum includes:

  • Conflict Theory
  • Stages of Mediated Problem-solving
  • Balancing Power
  • Managing the Negotiation
  • Strategic Communication Skills
  • Handling Emotions and Impasse
  • Mediator Ethics
  • Drafting Agreements
  • Role of Attorneys, Advisors and Dispute Resolution Professionals
