One of the first to respond, one of the last to leave: From Harm to Home

The International Rescue Committee – Since the IRC began under the guidance of Albert Einstein 75 years ago, it has worked tirelessly to alleviate the human toll of violent conflicts around the world by providing safety and sanctuary to innocent victims of war’s chaos. Recent initiatives include resettling displaced Iraqi and Burmese families and rebuilding schools in Afghanistan. The IRC is on the ground in over 25 countries, with a large resettlement operation in the United States. The San Diego office of the IRC first opened in 1975 to coordinate the large influx of Southeast Asian refugees following the fall of Saigon.

Resolving differences, revitalizing a vibrant arts community

El Centro Cultural de la Raza – A seven-year boycott by artists and former supporters of San Diego’s leading Chicano arts center, the Centro Cultural de la Raza, was ended last year after all sides came to the table in an arduous, eighteenth-month mediation process. Now reunited, former opposing factions are working collaboratively to move forward to uphold the mission of the Centro Cultural de la Raza through projects and programs that create, promote, preserve and educate about Mexicano/a, Chicano/a, Latino/a and indigenous art and culture throughout the region. The Centro’s historic circular facility in Balboa Park is known for its vivid murals and is home to the Ballet Folklorico en Aztlan.
