Mediation skills are not just for the workplace or high-level diplomacy -- they can be an effective means of resolving conflict right in our own backyard and neighborhoods. In 2008, the National Conflict Resolution Center launched a purpose driven pilot-program with the goal of providing local leaders, students and civic-minded citizens necessary tools to de-escalate conflict through alternative dispute resolution techniques. Urban Solutions improved upon this foundation by cultivating community collaboration and directly targeting underserved areas. A common root of conflict can be misunderstanding, often present with a wide diversity of cultural backgrounds in close proximity. |
Demonstrated Impact
The Urban Solutions program is a comprehensive system which integrates mediation and conflict management into San Diego communities with the most need. A key success has been building trust in these areas and remaining culturally sensitive while introducing new ideas for approaching conflict. NCRC’s resources are primarily dedicated to training identified leaders as mediators who then can, in turn, serve as an integral resource. Established outreach efforts continue to monitor progress and also generate greater future interest.
Our local San Diego communities and school districts have benefitted significantly from the two-fold agenda that Urban Solutions provides: initially, the training workshops equip potential community representatives with a skill set to manage already present conflict. Secondly, assists in developing a greater self-reliance upon those members living in their respective areas, bridging the distance that once separated groups/individuals. This promotes an awareness and respect that may deter future issues from developing by soliciting amicable solutions from those directly involved in conflict themselves. It also reinforces the interconnectedness of different ethnic groups in the community and can result in closer ties being forged. Consequently, Urban Solutions has become a vital means in reducing strain on local law-enforcement, costly city services and/or other limited resources.
NCRC mediation programs enable local communities to resolve conflict and promote peace in a collaborative way. Our hope is that a more civil society will result due to Urban Solutions.
